Pennsylvania has one of the strongest consumer protections laws in the country to protect residents against predatory payday lending. But, payday lenders are working to pass a bill in Harrisburg, HB 2191, that would roll back those protections and legalize payday loans at over 300% annual interest.
Predatory payday loans lead to bankruptcies, delinquencies on other bills, and the involuntary loss of bank accounts due to overdrafts. If allowed here, they will undermine the work we do to build individuals' and families' financial stability.
Please join us for an important briefing on this bill on Thursday, October 11, at 9 a.m. at the Philadelphia office of the local United Way, 1709 Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Learn more about how this bill will impact our work, and what you can do to stop it.
HB 2191 passed the House narrowly in June, and the payday lenders are working hard to pass the bill in the Senate during its final week of the session, which begins October 15.
Information about the bill is available at www.stoppaydayloanspa.com, where you can send an email to your Senator through this link. You can also reach your Senator through a toll-free hotline- 1-800-515-8134- run by one of our coalition partner's, the AARP.
Please come out for the breakfast briefing next Thursday to learn more. Light breakfast refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP to Joanna Darcus, jdarcus@clsphila.org, one of our coalition partners at Community Legal Services.
