‘Way To Work’ Program Ending In Philly
Thousands of jobs could be lost in Philadelphia at the end of the month.
A program, funded by federal stimulus money, called "Way to Work" is scheduled to end. The statewide program put tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians to work. Funding for the program runs out September 30th. The hope was that employers would keep the employees. But many cannot afford it.
John Dodds is with the Philadelphia Unemployment Project. He told Mike and Sheinelle "we need more jobs in this state and this county not less jobs." Dodds explained Pennsylvania was eligible to receive $359 million through the program. But only $97 million was spent. "So quite a bit of that money is going to go back to Washington." Dodd said Pennsylvania implemented the program in May which was a year late. "To see it end so quickly really doesn't make any sense, particularily how bad the economy is." The Senate is expected to consider extending the program when lawmakers return to Washington.
The group has scheduled a rally for Thursday. It will be held at 11:00am at the Super Fresh Supermarket at Progress Plaza which is located at 1501 N. Broad Street.
