Another Reason to Change the System..
Our day started at about 8:00 am this morning. The first thing I do every morning is check my blackberry when my alarm goes off. It has become a habit of mine whether good or bad we can debate that later. My obsessive compulsive email behavior means instant access to these holiday wishes like the one I received this morning. A woman emailed to say she wants health care reform passed in honor of her partner of over 30 years who died recently because he didn’t have insurance. I nearly teared up in the Staples’ Copy Center, Athena just looked at me and said, “Let’s go change the system.”
The frankness with which she told her story shocked me almost as much as the story. Shocked. Americans need to be shocked by this too, and no longer accept that’s the way the insurance companies operate. At what point did we become so complacent that it’s taking a massive campaign to put a stop to such brutal practices?
Today’s campaign stops included two senior citizen centers, two coffee houses and a vigil outside Montour County Courthouse. You’d think nearing the end of another 17 hour day on the road, especially with a schedule like the one Alison created, we’d be exhausted. And, we are. But the energy to get up and go again tomorrow will come again when I wake up, check my blackberry, find another story and another reason to ‘go change the system.’
