The Philadelphia Unemployment Project has a long history of advocating for access for health care for the uninsured. We have joined with a large group of other organizations to form the Pennsylvania Health Access Network (PHAN). We are currently hiring an Eastern Regional Organizer to build coalitions of PHAN member organizations and individuals in cities throughout eastern and central Pennsylvania.
General Duties
The Eastern Pennsylvania Organizer will develop a strong familiarity with communities in the eastern half of the state, with a strong emphasis on the Northeast and the Philadelphia suburbs. In selected community, he or she will seek to involve local organizations (such as churches, community groups and political organizations) in public education about healthcare reform. He or she will also do direct outreach to low-income individuals in these communities.
The Organizer will facilitate the building of local coalitions, facilitate setting agendas, turnout, follow-up and communications with the statewide coalition. He or she will also facilitate local activities, from press conferences and public events to educational meetings with legislators.
Help to involve specific groups in health reform efforts as directed, such as health care providers, businesses, hospitals, etc.
Assist with membership and coalition base in Philadelphia and statewide coalition as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.
Job requirements
Extensive overnight travel within the state. Candidates should own a car.
Experience in organizing and doing outreach in unfamiliar areas.
Strong desire to work with low-income people from diverse backgrounds.
Basic understanding of Microsoft computer applications. Familiarity with relational contact databases (such as those based in Access or Filemaker) a strong plus.
Desirable characteristics
A foundation in the health policy or issues of economic equity.
Experience working on a statewide or national electoral, labor or issue campaign.
Conversational in Spanish.
A B.A. is desirable but not required.

The Philadelphia Unemployment Project has a long history of advocating for access for health care for the uninsured. We are currently hiring for a Health Care Navigator/Organizer to assist uninsured people to access health care and to organize for city, state and federal policies that will guarantee that people can get the medical care that they need.
GENERAL DUTIES
Staff Health Rights Hotline. Answer questions for callers on full range of issues regarding health care access. Provide information, referral and advocacy regarding options for health care.
Become familiar with guidelines and procedures for Medicaid, low cost health insurance, hospital charity care, public health centers, prescription drug plans, and other programs of importance to the uninsured. Work with individuals to ensure that they receive medically necessary care, including advocating on individuals’ behalf to Hospitals, Public Assistance and others.
Produce simple materials for educational purpose explaining how to access health care. Take initiative and show creativity in distributing these materials and promoting the use of the Benefits Rights Hotline.
Work with the Philadelphia Unemployment Project (PUP) Health Committee and Pennsylvania Health Access Network to involve uninsured and concerned persons and organizations in efforts to advocate for policies leading to increased access to health care. Show creativity and initiative in find new ways to involve normal people in the issue and empower their activity.
Work to involve the uninsured in organizing efforts. Educate them on current policy issues and help them develop the ability to speak and strategize on health care reform issues. Work with the Community Organizer to expand the base of P.U.P. members and cultivate leadership among the existing base, including organizing them around other issues as assigned.
Reach out to organizations to involve them in coalition efforts designed to win state and federal health care reform. Follow legislative initiatives and keep organizations and activists informed on developments.
